25G 40G Migration Path Network Architecture – Official Technical Overview & Hardware Datasheet

PRODUCT IDENTIFICATION & MIGRATION CONTEXT

This document serves as the definitive technical reference for network architects and procurement specialists planning a structured transition from legacy 10G infrastructures to high-density 25G and 40G backbone topologies. The presented hardware platform eliminates stranded bandwidth and supports mixed-rate gearboxes for native 25G/40G interoperation without forklift upgrades.

CORE INTERNAL TOPOLOGY & GEARBOX ARCHITECTURE

The platform integrates a native 12.8 Tbps non-blocking switching fabric with integrated 25G/40G gearbox ASICs. Each 40G QSFP+ port can operate in breakout mode (4x10G) or native 40G mode, while 25G SFP28 ports support direct attachment to next-generation compute nodes. A centralized packet buffer of 32 MB dynamically allocates per-port queuing to absorb micro-bursts during rate transitions.

HARDWARE-LEVEL FAILOVER REDUNDANCY

– Dual, hot-swappable load-sharing power supplies (AC or DC variants)
– N+1 redundant variable-speed fan tray architecture with airflow reversal detection
– Hitless failover for link aggregation groups (LACP) and Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol (VRRP)
– Redundant management ports (1G RJ45 out-of-band) with automated sync

PROTOCOL SUPPORT MATRIX FOR MIXED RATES

– Ethernet: 10GBase, 25GBase, 40GBase (IEEE 802.3by, 802.3ba)
– Breakout modes: 40G to 4x10G, 100G to 4x25G (future-ready)
– Forwarding: IPv4/IPv6 static, OSPFv2/v3, BGP, IS-IS, ECMP
– Tunneling: VXLAN, NVGRE, MPLS (LDP/RSVP-TE)
– Congestion control: DCBx, PFC (Priority Flow Control), ETS

CORE PARAMETERS & LINE-RATE LIMITS

All 25G ports forward at line rate with cut-through latency below 600 ns. 40G ports introduce a maximum latency of 850 ns due to gearbox serialization. Non-blocking switching capacity ensures zero packet loss under full bi-directional load across all interfaces simultaneously.

TARGET BACKBONE TOPOLOGIES FOR MIGRATION

Three validated deployment models: (1) Leaf-Spine with 25G server leaves and 40G spine interconnects, (2) Campus collapsed core with 40G uplinks to distribution switches, and (3) Hybrid DCI where 40G trunk ports interconnect geographically separated data centers. The architecture preserves investment in existing 10G optics via breakout cables while establishing a clear path to 100G/400G future spine upgrades.
