Fiber Doctor

What is Fiber Doctor in WDM Network?

The Fiber Doctor (FD) is a fiber quality monitoring solution that applies the OTDR mechanism using WDM products. By precisely detecting the fiber connection status, the FD helps maintenance personnel analyze the quality of fiber connectors and splicing points, which facilitates quick fiber issue diagnosis.

The current FD solution of NG WDM uses the built-in probe laser on the TN12RAU1/TN12RAU2/TN12ST2 board to emit probe light and detects the insertion loss changes and change occurring positions in fibers based on the Rayleigh scattering and Fresnel reflection principles, and then reports the detected data to the NMS.

Board Type

Scenario

TN12RAU1/TN12RAU2 (1310   nm   OTDR laser)

This board is mainly used to ensure   that the Raman pump laser is properly started. It provides the following   functions:

ØLocates fault points when the   fiber connection detection results are abnormal. The fiber connection   detection can be performed using the FCD button on the front panel of the   TN12RAU1 or TN12RAU2 board in the fiber connection verification phase during   hardware installation.   ØChecks fiber quality before   deployment commissioning.   ØLocates fault points when the   Raman laser cannot be turned on and a LASER_OPEN_FAIL alarm is reported.   ØChecks fiber health status at any   time during network operations.

TN12ST2 (1511/1491   nm   OTDR laser)

This board is mainly used for fiber quality monitoring and fault diagnosis during O&M. It provides the   following functions:

ØChecks fiber quality before deployment commissioning.   ØPerforms real-time monitoring during network running and checks fiber status.  ØLocates fault points when a fiber cut occurs and a MUT_LOS alarm is reported, or verifies fiber recovery status after a fiber cut is removed.

License for the fiber doctor   management system software (One license is required for each of the forward   and reverse directions of the inter-site fiber connection, that is one license for each  OTDR port.)

Networking

ØThe FIU board connected to a TN12ST2 board and its peer FIU board must be TN13FIU03, TN16FIU01, or TN11SFIU01.   ØNo optical attenuator can be configured between the TMx and TMIx ports of the TN12ST2 board and between the TMIx port of the TN12ST2 board and the RMx port of the FIU board.  ØOn a short fiber span, a fixed optical attenuator (FOA) needs to be added to the RM1 or RM2 port of a TN12ST2 board rather than the TM1 or TM2 port of other OSC boards so that the fiber insertion loss is greater than 15 dB,   preventing receiver overload issues.
