The NetEngine 40E series universal service routers are high-end network products launched by Huawei. They mainly serve as edge nodes on IP backbone networks, IP metro networks, and large-scale IP networks.
Leveraging distributed hardware-based forwarding and non-blocking switching technologies, the NetEngine 40E series features line-rate forwarding capabilities, excellent scalability, and strong service processing capabilities. To implement reliable service transport, the series supports various services and flexible deployment of L2VPN, L3VPN, multicast, multicast VPN, MPLS TE, EVPN, Segment Routing-MPLS (SR-MPLS), Segment Routing IPv6 (SRv6), Flexible Ethernet (FlexE), and QoS. It also supports various value-added services, such as GRE tunneling, IPsec tunneling, and NetStream. In addition, the NetEngine 40E series fully supports IPv6 and smooth transition from IPv4 to IPv6, driving transport networks’ evolution towards broadband, diversification, and intelligence. As a carrier-grade platform that integrates user management and service control, this series supports user-specific service management to meet differentiated requirements.
The NetEninge 40E series includes devices that are applicable to networks of different scales: NE40E-X3, NE40E-X3A, NE40E-X8, NE40E-X8A, NE40E-X16 and NE40E-X16A. In this article, we will elaborate on the common license of Huawei NE40E Series Router.
NetEngine40E Common PPPoE/IPoE License
Generally, if an ISP wants to use PPPoE function, they will first choose ME60, because ME60 comes with PPPoE. However, NE40E also can activate PPPoE function. Then how can we get PPPoE function on NE40E?
To realize the PPPoE function on NE40E series router, first a license is required to activate the function of the whole machine.
This license controls L2TP, PPPoE, IPoE, EDSG, and DAA functions on a device.
Secondly, the license corresponding to the number of users is activated according to the number of subscribers;
– This license controls the number of BAS access users. Each license allows the access of 1000 users. This license controls the number of PPPoE users, instead of the number of IPoE users, for BAS access.
Finally, the service boards also need to support PPPoE. It should be noted that if the interface board is an integrated card (LPUI), the authorization of the entire card is required; if it is a master card (LPUF), only the master card needs to be activated, and the daughter card does not require a license. Of course, there are some interface boards with “-E” at the end, such as LPUF-480-E, which support PPPoE function, so no separate license is needed.
– This license controls the PPPoE/IPoE function.
The following are some PPPoE service board licenses:
– This license controls the PPPoE/IPoE function. The LPUF-120 series boards do not support PPPoE/IPoE. To allow an LPUF-120 to support PPPoE/IPoE, configure this license.
– Applicable Board: CR5DLPUFB070/CR5DLPUFB07B/CR5DLPUFB07E
– This license controls the PPPoE/IPoE function. The LPUI-240 series boards do not support PPPoE/IPoE. To allow an LPUI-240 to support PPPoE/IPoE, configure this license.

NetEngine40E Common NAT License
What’s NAT? Network address translation (NAT) is an IP address translation technology that allows multiple private network users to share some public IPv4 addresses to access the public network. NAT devices convert private IPv4 addresses in data packets into public IPv4 addresses and record the mapping before users access the internet. The following are the commonly used NAT function licenses of NE40E series routers:
– Each VSUF-80/VSUF-160/VSUI-160-E/VSUI-400 must be configured with one license to support the NAT64 function.
– One license must correspond to one VSUF-80/VSUF-160/VSUI-160-E/VSUI-400 in the 1:1 relationship.
– For the VSUF-80/VSUF-160/VSUI-160-E/VSUI-400, the active nat64 vsuf slot command is run in the license view to activate the license.
– Applicable Board: CR5DVSUF8010/CR5DVSUFD010/CR5CGNBASD70/CR5CGNBASA70/CR5CGNBASD71/CR5CGNBASA71/CR5CGNBASD77/CR5DVSUIK076
/CR5DVSUIK078/CR5DVSUIK070/CR5DVSUIK071/CR5DVSUIK074/CR5DVSUIK07A/CR5DVSUIK07C
– Each VSUF-80/VSUF-160/VSUI-160-E must be configured with one license to support the L2NAT function.
– One license must correspond to one VSUF-80/VSUF-160/VSUI-160-E in the 1:1 relationship.
– For the VSUF-80/VSUF-160/VSUI-160-E, the active l2nat vsuf slot command is run in the license view to activate the license.
– Applicable Board: CR5DVSUF8010/CR5DVSUFD010/CR5CGNBASD70/CR5CGNBASA70/CR5CGNBASD71/CR5CGNBASA71/CR5CGNBASD77

– The license controls the number of supported NAT sessions on the VSUF-80/VSUF-160/VSUI-160-E and VSUI-400. The number is a multiple of 2M. In actual applications, you can run the active nat session-table size command in the license view to allocate license resources to the CPU of a service board.
– Applicable Board: CR5DVSUF8010/CR5DVSUFD010/CR5CGNBASD70/CR5CGNBASA70/CR5CGNBASD71/CR5CGNBASA71/CR5CGNBASD77/CR5DVSUIK076/CR5DVSUIK078
