Abstract
ME60-X3 and ME60-X8 are the Huawei ME60 Series BRAS router with the industry’s largest capacity routing line cards (480G) plus a large-capacity NAT service line card(160G), enabling smooth evolution from IPv4 to IPv6.
Misleadingly, we always consider ME60-X3 has three slots and ME60-X8 has 8 slots. It seems that their difference only lies in slots number, however that is far from true. Even for slots number, what we describe is not fully correct since ME60-X3 has 5 slots and ME60-X8 has 11 slots.
In this article, we will make a comparison between ME60-X3 and ME60-X8 in terms of slots layout, forwardering performance, switching capacity and etc., in the mean time, giving basic knowlege of ME60 series router.
ME60 Series Router Description
The ME60 series is a range of multiple-service control gateways—a type of Broadband Remote Access Server (BRAS)—developed by Huawei to serve as a platform for unified user access and management, and most suitable for industries such as broadcasting, television, and education. Based on a 2T platform, the series boasts the industry’s largest-capacity routing line card (480G) plus a large-capacity NAT service line card (160G), enabling smooth evolution from IPv4 to IPv6.
- Large Capacity
Developed based on a 2T platform, with the industry’s largest capacity routing line cards (480G) plus large capacity Network Address Translation (NAT) service line cards (160G).
- High ReliaIntegratedlity
Stable operation of services is guaranteed with device-, network-, and service-level reliaIntegratedlity and innovative multiple-device hot backups.
- Full-Service Access
Unified platform for user access and management with full support for various access services, including IPoX, PPPoX, 802.1x, and web authentication.
- Appearance
ME60-X3 Layout
ME60-X3 has AC and DC power with different slot layout, both in total 5 slots, including 3 LPUs and 2 MPUs.
ME60-X8 Layout
ME60-X8 only has DC power with 11 slots, including 8 LPUs, 2 SRUs, and 1 SFU.

ME60 Router Common License
- ME60 2M NAT Session License
Controllable feature: This license controls NAT for VSUF-80s/VSUF-160s/VSUI-160-Es.The number of NAT session tables that can be created on a device equipped with VSUF-80s or VSUF-160s ranges from 0 to 512. The unit is 2M. The number of NAT session tables that can be created on a device equipped with VSUI-160-Es ranges from 0 to 1024. The unit is 2M. This license is a device-level resource license. In application, a command must be run to allocate license resources to service boards or CPUs:- active nat session-table size (license view) for the VSUF-80/VSUF-160/VSUI-160-E.
- ME60 20Gbps capacity license for VSU Series Units
Controllable feature: The VSUF-80/VSUF-160/VSUI-160-E supports capacity expansion.
A VSUF-80 mother board supports a default capacity of 20Gbit/s and can be increased to 40 Gbit/s. To expand the capacity, equip a VSUF-80 mother board with a 20Gbit/s license.
A VSUF-160 mother board supports a default capacity of 40 Gbit/s and can be increased to 80 Gbit/s. To expand the capacity, equip a VSUF-160 mother board with a maximum of two 20 Gbit/s licenses.
A VSUI-160-E supports a default capacity of 80 Gbit/s and can be increased to 160 Gbit/s. A VSUI-160-E has a mother board and two subcards. To expand the capacity, configure 20 Gbit/s licenses for the CPUs of the mother board and subcards. A maximum of four 20 Gbit/s licenses can be configured for a VSUI-160-E.
- ME60 Quantity of Concurrent Subscribers(1k Subscribers)
Controllable feature: This license controls the number of BAS access users. Each license allows the access of 1000 users.
In conclusion, though ME60-X3 and ME60-X8 both support Broadband Remote Access Server(BRAS) function; in comparison with ME60-X3, ME60-X8 has more than 8 times forwarding performance, 7 times switching capacity and more slots for capacity expansion.
What’s more, when you choose the ME60-X3 or ME60-X8 mother card and daughter card, please must have a look at their compatability to make them run smoothly.
It is also note that there are also integrated cards on ME60 for your choice, which integrates the function of mother and daughter card since integrated cards and mother card with daughter card are interchangeable.
Hope you could know how to choose the more appreciate router between ME60-X3 and ME60-X8. If you are still not quite clear about ME60-X3 and ME60-X8, please contact our team freely.
