NE8000 M8 router and Licenses overview

Huawei NetEngine 8000 series routers are Huawei's next-generation, high-end intelligent routers for all scenarios. They are predominantly suited to scenarios including access and aggregation, private line, inter-national gateway (IGW), data center-gateway (DC-GW), and data center interconnect (DCI) to help build intent-driven IP bearer networks that feature a simplified architec-ture, intelligent connections, and high availability. The NetEngine 8000 series features an ultra-broadband network platform, SRv6- based intelligent connections, and full-lifecycle automation. It provides rich service types and high-reliability SLA quality, making it the best choice for enterprise customers in digital transformation.

The NetEngine 8000 consists of the X, M, and F series, including the NetEngine 8000 X8, NetEngine 8000 X4, NetEngine 8000 M14, NetEngine 8000 M8, NetEngine 8000 M6, NetEngine 8000 M1A, and NetEngine 8000 F1A, applicable to networks of different scales.

In this article, we will introduce the Huawei NE8000 M8 router and its common license to you.

Highlights of NE8000 M8 Routers

Industry-Leading Ultra-Broadband Platform

The ultra-broadband converged bearer platform supports up to 14.4T per slot, more than 1.5 times the industry average, meeting enterprises' requirements for full-scenario and large-capacity service access.

SRv6-Powered Intelligent Connections

IPv6 Segment Routing (SRv6) is a future-oriented, next-generation simplified protocol that inherently supports IPv6, facilitating the access of numerous terminals, while simplifying protocols and configurations.

Strong Service Support Capabilities

  • Powerful routing capabilities: The NetEngine 8000 supports super large routing tables and diverse routing protocols.

  • Strong service bearing capabilities: IP, Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS), and SRv6 can be deployed on the NetEngine 8000 as required.

  • Powerful expandable multicast capabilities: The NetEngine 8000 supports various IPv4/IPv6 multicast protocols.

NE8000 M8 Licenses overview

Defination: A license is an authorization file that controls the capacity, functions, and validity period of a software version. It is generated through a dedicated encryption tool based on contract information and is delivered in electronic format.

Figure 1 License classification

As shown in Figure 1, licenses can be classified as follows:

  • In terms of commercial use, licenses are classified as either commercial or non-commercial licenses.

Non-commercial licenses are mainly used in exhibition, R&D, and in non-R&D labs. Commercial licenses are generally used at commercial sites. In addition to commercial projects, commercial licenses can also be used in testing (including beta tests) and certification.

  • Based on the validity period, licenses can be classified as fixed-term or permanent licenses.

After a fixed-term license is activated, it can be used within the fixed period. After the fixed-term license expires, it needs to be activated again. Non-commercial licenses generally have a fixed validity period. A permanent license can be used permanently after being activated. Currently, licenses that are purchased for commercial projects are all permanent licenses.

Fixed-term licenses are also called temporary licenses or pre-sales expansion licenses in enterprise network projects.

  • Based on whether the device is directly controlled, licenses are classified into sales item licenses and control item licenses, or sales items and control items for short.

A control item is a license item that directly exerts control over a device. A sales item contains one or more control items. The addition or deletion of sales items does not involve the modification of the software package. Therefore, license control items are classified into sales items and control items to reduce the impact of sales strategy changes on software versions.

  • In terms of the license management mode, licenses are classified as cloud licenses and non-cloud licenses.

In cloud license mode, you can activate and manage a license resource pool on the license management platform to dynamically allocate and reclaim license control items among multiple devices registered in the resource pool, implementing license resource sharing and dynamic adjustment among multiple devices. The non-cloud license mode is the traditional standalone license mode. The license resources of each device are static and fixed. To adjust the allocation of license resources among multiple devices, you need to split the license and activate it again.

  • Licenses can also be classified based on the objects activated by operators. Table 1 shows the classification.

License

Description

GTL

The license file is preinstalled on a device before delivery or can be downloaded from the ESDP website based on the project contract and device ESN. Commercial licenses and non-commercial licenses (excluding trial licenses) are physically presented as license files.

Hardware RTU license

Hardware RTU licenses control the permission to use ports on boards or on box-shaped devices sold in consumption model (CM). If hardware RTU licenses are not activated for such ports, the use of these ports is restricted.

Service license

A software license control item that controls one or more services. There are two types of service licenses:

· Function control service license: With Item type being Function, this type of license takes effect on the entire device.

· Resource control service license: With Item type being Resource, this type of license takes effect on the board in a specified slot or on a specified port.

Trial license

License control item that supports trial use. A trial license contains all features supported by the device, including RTU and service license resources. A trial license can be enabled twice for each R version. Each time a trial license is enabled, it can be used for a maximum of 90 days. When the trial period ends, the controlled features become invalid immediately or after the board or device is restarted. These controlled features can still be used only if a commercial license is purchased.

NE8000 M8 RTU, NAT and BNG Licenses overview

NetEngine 8000 M8 240G/480G upgrade to 1T2 RTU(per IPU):
·This license is used to control the bandwidth capacity of the board; the initial capacity is 240G/480G, and the capacity is expanded to 1.2T after the license is activated.

NetEngine 8000 M Series Integrated Service Card CGN Service 10Gbps Capacity RTU:

  • The VSUP-100 supports capacity expansion. The default capacity is 0 Gbit/s and can be expanded to a maximum of 90 Gbit/s.
  • To expand the capacity of a VSUP-100, run the active nat bandwidth-enhance <bandwidth> slot <slot-id> command in the license view.
